My name is Karina Grosheva; I am from Russia, and I was 28 years old when I joined to Alterna in 2014. I went to Guatemala at the time of my career change challenge. I was a management consultant for years in innovative solutions to businesses. However, I aspired to start entrepreneurial and private sector development and innovation as part of the broader sector of international development.
I was particularly fascinated with the ideas that bring both business opportunities and social and environmental impact at the same time, i.e., inclusive business. Following Alterna, I joined the UNDP team on private sector development and inclusive industry.
I wanted to get closer to the field that particular summer. Alterna is an ideal setup where you remotely think of solutions, are close to the center of innovation, and work directly with entrepreneurs, with the idea of human-centered design innovation.
We had an exciting experience working on biodigesters production. We have had an excellent team to ideate the model. Client feedback was seamless, and it remained a part of my professional portfolio.
My most memorable moment with Alterna was at the fair of Estufas Dona Dora. ¡My colleagues taught me doing tortillas on the stoves!
I think that my biggest takeaway from working with Alterna is that it is tough to create real impact without a business mindset.
After my experience with Alterna, I have been working in inclusive business, social entrepreneurship, and private sector development professional within UNDP. Here I have been part of our programs in social entrepreneurship in Kenya, Ghana, Zambia. I also started my social enterprise focusing on refugees’ digital skills and development – http://taqadam.io
Since then, I am now thinking further about business and that we -social entrepreneurs, need to believe more on the value we create and undoubtedly in markets.
