Hi! I’m excited to share a little about myself and my journey to Alterna with you. I’m originally from the United States, where I grew up in New Jersey. I was never one of those people that knew from the age of four that she wanted to be a doctor, so I chose to study Marketing and Information Systems at university because I felt they were broad enough to leave my professional options open. I graduated still unsure of a career I wanted to pursue. After graduation I got a job at a consulting firm in New York and, knowing that consulting can feed into many different careers, I decided to take the job and moved to the city. I spent two and a half years working in technology consulting for one of the big four consulting firms but never saw a long-term career in consulting I struggled with a lack of purpose or mission in my day to day. I’ve always been curious about other cultures and interested in exploring the world, so I decided to take the time to travel, explore, and reflect. I thought perhaps the hospitality industry would be a better fit based on my interests.
I spent ten months backpacking across South America and had the best experience. I began learning Spanish, I met new people from around the world, I learned about new cultures and ways of life, and gained more confidence in my strengths and abilities. It was during that time that I really started to reflect upon the opportunities I’ve had throughout my life, in comparison to the opportunities afforded people around the world. I started to think about ways in which I can utilize the skills I gained as a result of my circumstance, and pay it forward globally, for a positive social impact. I started to shift my focus away from hospitality to social impact, specifically with an international focus. It became clear to me that businesses today are almost all international players. Modern commerce leads us to an interconnected world so that nothing done inside the United States can stand alone from third world countries. I began to feel strongly that we have a responsibility to use international commerce and business practices to support the well-being of all stakeholders, including those in less fortunate circumstances.
When I returned home from my travels, I decided to look for jobs specifically in global economic development and social entrepreneurship. My search led me to Alterna, where I was immediately drawn to the mission of the platform. I’m excited to take my experience in consulting and use it to collaborate with social entrepreneurs in Central America. I’m also looking forward to gaining experience living and working in Guatemala where I’ll hopefully begin to better understand the difficulties and unique setbacks that we don’t experience in the United States.
I know there will be many challenges along the way, not least of which is trying to learn and work in a new language other than my native English. I know that the struggles with be worth the effort and ultimately it will make me a stronger, more empathetic professional. During my time with Alterna I hope to better understand and empathize with entrepreneurs working within a less established system. I also hope to explore how businesses find the proper balance of financial gains and social impact. I am confident that this exposure will create a strong bedrock for a career path that is full of purpose and meaning. I know that my time with Alterna will leave a positive impact on me, both professionally and personally, and I hope that I’m able to leave my mark on the organization and entrepreneurs in Central America.

Soy de New Jersey, Estados Unidos.
Mi búsqueda me llevó a Alterna.
